Nineties rock fans finally have something to buzz about again. The biggest alternative rock news since the re-formation of Alice in Chains, guitarist and vocalist Billy Corgan (Smashing Pumpkins) announced Friday that he and three other alternative rock stars were in the early stages of forming the latest rock supergroup. According to Corgan, the group had begun considering coming together since late 2008, but had just recently made the decision to go for it.

The three other members, bassist Krist Novoselic (Nirvana, Eyes Adrift), drummer Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters), and John Frusciante (Red Hot Chili Peppers), have yet to confirm the legitimacy of this claim, but Corgan seemed to speak sincerely of the matter. The group, deciding on the name “fishfat”, hopes to begin writing original material to be released in late 2010 to early 2011.

Why does modern rock music suck so bad?

February 11, 2009

I have now clue why, but i’m gonna try to answer it anyway. After the early 90′s alternative movement (which was some of the best music i’ve ever heard by the way) bands started just copying all of it. Bands like nipplecrack and any other band that is really labeled as ‘alternative rock’ but is nothing more than shitty pop rock, really ruined alternative rock.

And then you gotta talk about indie bands. Now i havent really listened to much indie, but you know what, some of it really isn’t bad. Its just that some of these indie bands try to be so damn hipster that they dont even make decent music. They just try to make it sound so different that you just get a bunch of happy worthless bullshiite.

Ok, so OLD Alice in Chains is one of my favorite bands, but I dont know about this William Duvall guy. I just dont think that AIC’s new album will be anything close to what they had with Layne Stayley.

Another 90′s band that is my favorite is Nirvana. I can pretty much listen to any one of their songs and like it. BUT IM NOT TALKING ABOUT SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT. Thats not even a good song. If you really like Nirvana, then you’ll like the songs like “old age”, “marigold”, “verse chorus verse”, stuff like that, which isnt so blown out of proportion.

Now dont get me wrong, just because songs are popular, such as “in bloom”, “all apologies”, “come as you are”, and “about a girl”, doesnt mean i dont like them. These really are good songs, but its just that people will like maybe 2 or 3 songs, and then call themselves Nirvana Fans. After Nirvana, all the so called ‘alternative singers’ tried singing with the grit in their voice like Kurt Cobain did, and they sounded terrible doing it. Kurt is the only one that could do it good.

And then you have bands like wolfmother, who have a decent album, but its nothing new. Any band can release shiz that sounds like older shiz, but they just had no uniqueness.

Bands that arent usually played on the radio nowadays usually seem to be the best. For example, in 2007, Dinosaur Jr. released Beyond, which in my opinion was a pretty good album. But i never have heard any on the radio, except maybe on 92.3. And i dont like emo, ska, punky shiite like a lot of popular music today.

I sure hope to god that a good band can come out with a new sound that i like, because im running out of music to listen to. Oh, and by the way, Silversun Pickups is actually a pretty decent band that is modern. Im surprised  i actually liked their sound.

Ok, so about a week after Michael Phelps is suspended for a picture of him smoking a bong, Alex Rodriguez admits to taking steroids. The one big difference between these two incidences? A-rod won’t be punished. If he failed the drug test all the way back in 2003, then why wasn’t he suspended back then? Now I don’t know the details of MLB testing policy, but it seems like we should have known this sometime in the last six years. Now its too late to really do much to A-rod, even though his confession is worse than Phelps’. For one, smoking a bong will not make you better at swimming. Steroids WILL make you stronger, and therefore give you an advantage in sports. Then you have the people who say that Phelps is such a public figure, so you have to do something to him. Well, I agree that he should have set a better example, but A-rod is probably currently the most recognizeable name in baseball, so you can’t really argue with that. I just think that it’s unfair that one athlete can get away with steroids, and another gets suspended for smoking pot. Im sure that if you anonymously polled athletes, there would be a large number that have probably smoked pot at least once in their life.
